ClutterBench: A Benchmark for Evaluating
Vision-Language-Action Models
in Cluttered Environments

Anonymous Authors

Abstract

Humans naturally perform manipulation in cluttered environments, reasoning about occlusions, collisions, and constrained motion. However, existing robotic manipulation benchmarks predominantly evaluate performance in sparse and structured scenes — the primary training and evaluation source for modern Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models. As a result, VLA behavior in clutter remains poorly understood.

We introduce ClutterBench, the first benchmark designed to assess VLA manipulation capabilities in cluttered environments, featuring four task categories with increasing difficulty: orderly, random, complex, and temporal dynamic clutter.

We evaluate 7 VLA models in simulation and 3 in the real-world, finding that even the best model achieves below 60% average success rate across all clutter types - revealing fundamental limitations in task understanding, spatial reasoning, and interaction planning. Real-world evaluation confirms that model rankings and dominant failure modes are consistent across platforms.

The ClutterBench Benchmark

ClutterBench spans static to dynamic clutter, testing path planning, collision avoidance, manipulation in constrained spaces, and adaptation to unexpected perturbations. All tasks share a common goal: reach a target bowl while avoiding surrounding obstacles.

📦
Orderly Clutter
Objects in a regular matrix. Tests basic collision avoidance as grid density and spacing tighten.
🌀
Random Clutter
Irregular sector-ring obstacle layouts. Tests spatial reasoning by restricting approach angles.
🗄️
Complex Clutter
Furniture environments (cabinets, microwaves, shelves). Targets may be hidden inside structures.
⏱️
Temporal Dynamic
Mid-episode perturbations — drawers open, objects fall, doors occlude. Tests real-time adaptation.

Simulation vs. Real-World Coverage

Simulation — 7 Models
Models: OpenVLA, OpenVLA-OFT, π0, π0-FAST, π0.5, UniVLA, WorldVLA
Suites: All four (Orderly, Random, Complex, Temporal Dynamic)
Robot: Franka Panda (LIBERO checkpoints)
Real-World — 3 Models
Models: π0.5-DROID, π0-FAST-DROID, π0-DROID
Suites: Orderly, Random, Complex Clutter
Robot: Franka Panda (DROID checkpoints)
Despite the sim-to-real gap and different checkpoints (LIBERO vs. DROID), model rankings and dominant failure modes are consistent across both platforms, validating ClutterBench as an effective evaluation framework.

Simulation: Zero-Shot Evaluation (7 Models)

Each model evaluated 5× per configuration. Metrics: success rate, non-target object displacement (m), and time steps. Bold = best per class.

Key Findings

01
VLAs Struggle in Clutter
Even the best model (π0.5) achieves below 60% average success rate across all clutter types zero-shot. UniVLA and WorldVLA score 0% on orderly clutter. Clear deficiencies in spatial reasoning and interaction planning.
02
Success Rate Overestimates Quality
Object displacement reveals many successful executions involve significant collisions. Success rate alone does not imply quality of execution.
03
Simulation Predicts Real-World
Rankings (π0.5 > π0-FAST > π0) and failure modes are consistent across platforms, validating simulation as a reliable proxy.
